The daughter in question is Balfour, who had a reputation for being a 'difficult' actress, but Hitchcock obtains a spirited performance from her and she virtually carries the movie.

“Champagne” This film by Alfred Hitchcock is one of his earlier works of of silent film nature. It is sort of a mixed bag of hitchcocks strategical filmmaking even at this early age. Movie about a young girl who wants to marry her rich lover but her dad thinks this boy is a gold digger doesn't realize that he is wealthy on his own accord. So Betty who plays the girl Jakes and aeroplane to catch up with the boat that her boyfriend is on and seeks him out to get him to marry her. But her daddy has other ideas as you will see he sends somebody to look out for his daughter and intervene. But like all Hitchcock movies this one has little twists at the end and I give this a score of 5.

An extremely simple & familiar plot (rich, spoiled heiress loses everything, must learn to fend for herself), with strangely little of actual worth to say about wealth, class, family, romance, or anything else. Worse yet, the intention of the film from moment to moment is confusing. Humor? Poignancy? Drama? Not sure. There are some decent early-Hitchcock visuals to lean on (shot through champagne bubbles), & Balfour is an undeniably strong presence, neither of which make the storytelling of worth.

Champagne is one of Hitchcock's weaker films. I was underwhelmed by Betty Balfour in the lead role, and the paper-thin plot left a lot to be desired. I understand what this movie was going for, but it didn't succeed.

Some mildly amusing visual gags and the indications that Hitchcock really could have made a great Titanic movie are the only things to take away from this. Sums up the mediocrity of most of his British silent work unfortunately.
