Daniel M @RT81384916 Jul 11 Tough watch, but beautiful story. There are many themes in this film, but what stood out to me was the importnace of letting go and being open. The title Gaijin, which I believe translates to "outsider," resonates very closely with the main character. Our protagonist isn't just a literal foreigner in Japan, but also foreign or alien to his twin brothers' life and experience. He is learning to be vulnerable and see the bigger picture of life. By the end of the film, I no longer think our protagonist is a "Gaijin". Instead, he embraces his brother's life, as well as his greater family in heaven, not perfectly but sincerely. I also am impressed how the movie handles heavy topics of sexual abuse and suicide, while also being quite comedic. The film balances the two worlds of joyful discovery and pain respectfully well. At least that's my interpretation, first watch. Overall, I'd say this is an excellent watch! See more Randall B @rbarnes25 May 5 This film is solid all around - the story, the acting, the direction, the settings, etc. are all exceptional. What I liked is that it doesn't feel in any way contrived and there's nothing over-the-top to dazzle you. Gaijin is just full of real human experiences with real human reactions. The film doesn't shy away from deep subjects either and none are handle with quick and easy answers. The Chamberlain brothers clearly respect their audience and they express their message powerfully without needing to beat you over the head with it. I'd highly recommend it. Gaijin captured strong themes of forgiveness, strength, courage, peace, adversity and hope. There's a strong current of mercy and grace that really pulls in the viewer and highlights patience while going through life storms in the midst of painful tragedies. Lewis, at once hero and antagonist, flees from his grief and grapples with unmet desire, rage, and a thirst for purpose. The central conflict hinges between Lewis and the ghost of his twin, Ezekiel, and dialogue between them somehow sidesteps being trite. The film is visually vast—spanning Japanese sea cliffs, subways, baseball stadiums, and Zimbabwean sunsets—but still manages to breathe in moments of vulnerability. Dialogue is earnest, snappy, and painfully human. Gaijin is funny and true, and doesn’t pull its punches. I was laughing and in tears. In quotes because while yes there IS a boy-meets-girl storyline, but the heart of this movie is the love story between brothers. It’s been years since I’ve seen a movie that made me think about it the next day. I just kept going over the weight of the promises we make and how important it is to fulfill them. Gajin reminded me how much I love indie movies, and now want to rewatch a bunch of old ones from the 90s. Gajin is the opposite of all the meh movies and cookie cutter 8-episode series that have been crowding our queues and DVRs. It’s raw, moving, and hopeful.
