An up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young, the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty Pavement. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band's early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. Thirty years on with scoliosis, blood clots, and a shriveled liver, Gary is still drumming with no regrets. Note: no puppets were harmed in the making of this film.

A really enjoyable look at Gary Young and the early days of Pavement. Entertaining, insightful, and a great snapshot of who he was during the band's formative years. Not a life-changing documentary, but definitely worth watching if you're a Pavement fan.

Hilarious and highly entertaining music doc on that surprisingly avoids most of the things that can usually make them a bore. Using brilliant animation and puppetry to illustrate many key scenes, The story explores one of the most unlikely musical alliances which led to a rapid and wild ride into indie glory and then an almost Shakespearean tragic fall. While viewers who don't already love Pavement may still wonder how these guys became one of the most influential indie rock bands of the 90's, there is no denying the frenetic power of their music and uncompromising devotion to keeping it real. It's a great ride for any rock music fan and a moving cautionary tale that you'll remember.
