The 2019 film has some atmosphere, a solid cast and a few effective moments, but it never fully captures the deep unease and moral darkness of the book. The cursed place should feel overwhelming, almost unbearable, yet the film often turns that dread into more conventional horror mechanics. It is watchable, and viewers unfamiliar with the novel may find it a decent modern horror film, but for those who read the book and felt its sadness and cruelty, this adaptation falls short. It has polish, but not enough poison, despair or lasting fear. On paper, I actually liked the direction they took for some of the plot points. Sadly, this movie lacked heart. I tell my friends Pet Sematary is the best book on grief I’ve ever read. The story is its best when Louis is wrestling a decision he knows will not truly undo his loss. This tension doesn’t translate well into film, in either adaptation. The book is a beautiful, deeply human story. While there are glimmers of greatness in this adaptation (the creative liberties were mostly good, I swear!), it completely failed to touch on the emotional realities that made the book so good, and also somehow managed to fail at being scary, to boot. See more Realtin D @Royalteen Jun 9 Terrible. As a Stephen King fan I read the book before I watched the movie- the book was good (recommend) but the movie was just bad. It didn’t give the book justice and it felt extremely rushed. They switched up the roles for Ellie and Gage for some reason. The actors were mid and not what they described in the book- Ellie looked a lot older then I imagined based on the book- Gage was pretty precise. See more Read all reviews
