Top Gun (1986) Peter Stack "Top Gun" is a visual stunner. I think its chief entertainment value lies in protracted photographic excitement - simply the best aerial photography seen in the jet age.

Mortal Kombat II (2026) Bob Strauss “Mortal Kombat II” is a sterling example of an action movie that starts out dumb but gradually becomes kind of awesome -- and a little bit smarter.

I Swear (2025) Mick LaSalle The movie’s secret weapon — and guilty pleasure — is the occasional humor it finds in Davidson’s predicament.

Erupcja (2025) Michael Ordoña Despite the narrow visual confines, there’s space for the characters and relationships to reveal themselves. We feel dropped into the bohemian corners of Warsaw.

The Beautiful Game (2024) Mick LaSalle Ultimately, it all comes down to Ward and Nighy... They seemed to believe they were in a better movie than the one they were in, and for stretches of time, they make us believe them.

The Fly (1986) Walter V. Addiego Scriptwriters Cronenberg and Charles Edward Pogue give Brundle lots of quotable lines.

Sometimes They Come Back (1991) John Carman Peters out quickly enough, and the only point really is a few hours of ghostly diversion and shock to the viewer's nervous system.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026) Tony Bravo Thankfully, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is not the sad Temu redo it could have been. The devil is truly in the film’s details, and fans will no doubt spend the next 20 years parsing every line of dialogue and every outfit, as they did the first movie.

Hokum (2026) Bob Strauss It’s frightening how “Hokum” moves from murder mystery to supernatural shenanigans and then to psychological horror with such confidence. It’s exhilarating as well.

Over Your Dead Body (2026) G. Allen Johnson About the only spark generated by “Over Your Dead Body” is the running joke about Lisa’s skills as an actor.

Michael (2026) G. Allen Johnson Domingo provides depth and nuance to a movie that might otherwise have none, his tough-as-leather performance meshing well with the tender turn by Nia Long as matriarch Katherine Jackson.

The Bad News Bears Go to Japan (1978) Judy Stone If "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" seemed like a limp leftover after the zesty, often provocative original... Japan is a bad trip with all the expected cliches about the difficulties of East meeting West, and friendship finally conquering all.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Peter Stack Of course, in Hughes' hands, it's all lovely fantasy—a crisp idealization of the joys, and small woes, of being young.
Posted Apr 22, 2026Edit critic review
Trilogy of Terror II (1996) John Carman The little fellas is more ridiculous than terrifying in 1996, and Curtis hasn't gained an ounce of delicacy as a director.

The Christophers (2025) Mick LaSalle The film feels very directed, the product of a single vision pushing things along. Yet at the same time, it feels relaxed, confident and open to sudden inspiration.

Lorne (2026) G. Allen Johnson “Lorne” makes it clear that nearly everyone in the entertainment industry who is known for creating laughs owes a debt of gratitude to the master.

The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977) Judy Stone Unfortunately, director Michael Pressman doesn't have Ritchie's skill at getting his young performers to act natural.

Outcome (2026) Mick LaSalle “Outcome” shifts tone from scene to scene and is all over the place, and yet it works.

Exit 8 (2025) G. Allen Johnson It works for a while, but there’s only so much one can do with such a confining, empty storyline. Even at 95 minutes, “Exit 8” seems stretched out. There’s simply not enough there for a feature-length movie.

Hamlet (2025) Mick LaSalle Beyond flashy but empty gestures, little or no thought went into making sense of the update.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) Zaki Hasan Given the first film's success and the fanbase it helped build for this sequel, you can't help but wonder why the instinct is still to go wider instead of deeper, louder instead of more heartfelt.

Newborn (2026) Bob Strauss Considering both the form and intimate nature of the film, performances are more crucial here than in most thrillers. As mentioned, Oyelowo and Stoxx deliver the goods, never more so than in their tense yet tender scenes together.

Victor/Victoria (1982) Judy Stone Edwards' "live and let live" theme has a refreshing sweetness and generosity; it's too bad the execution did not measure up to his conception.

Aliens (1986) Peter Stack The dark design of "Aliens" is captivating and disturbing, on almost every level.

On Moonlight Bay (1951) Marjorie McCabe It may not hang together very well, but many of its sequences are little short of captivating.

The Mouthpiece (1932) George C. Warren A brilliant example of picture making -- a coherent, straightforward, vigorous, well-made film. There are no unnecessary steps; no side streets in which to wander about looking for the main road.

The Muppet Movie (1979) Judy Stone It would not be fair to say, "I've seen detergents that leave a better film than this," just to quote the funniest line in "The Muppet Movie"...But it does leave something to be desired: like more satire and less goopy sentimentality.

The Towering Inferno (1974) Stephen Farber Despite the pretense of social criticism, this is a profoundly reactionary movie, in its primitive morality, and in its fundamental assumptions about men and women.

The Patsy (1928) SF Chronicle Staff If it is not new in theme, it is very well done -- by far the best of Marion's pictures.
Posted Apr 06, 2026Edit critic review
Pal Joey (1957) Paine Knickerbocker "Pal Joey"...is a fairy tale-a fairy tale told by the wicked stepmother-and if finally she has an irrational moment of sentimentality, so that Kim and Sinatra may walk off together, one cannot trumpet too loudly his disappointment at her lack of logic.

The Drama (2026) G. Allen Johnson It’s Zendaya’s movie. Her layered performance holds back then lets go as Emma’s full complexity is gradually revealed. If you can’t get on board with Emma, then you’re the problem -- which partly is Borgli’s intention.

Tow (2025) Carla Meyer As Byrne’s performance highlights throughout “Tow,” it takes a certain inner steel to fight so diligently for what some might dismiss as a hunk of junk.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026) Michael Ordoña The sequel’s worst sin is resorting to the “screaming female” trope. Grace was so much tougher in the first one, and so much more fun.

RoboCop 3 (1993) Peter Stack "RoboCop 3" out to be a lot more mean and harrowing a sci-fi thriller than it is. Yet it still has a wicked humor underneath its prophetic grin.

Reminders of Him (2026) Mick LaSalle What’s beautiful and impressive about Monroe in this film is her range — not just her ability to play a range of emotion, which is to be expected, but rather her ability to play a range of essence.

André Is an Idiot (2025) G. Allen Johnson The documentary is mostly uplifting and serves not only as a kick in the butt, so to speak, for those who are putting off their colonoscopies, but also as a tribute to an unconventional San Francisco life.
