Critics Consensus

Carrie is a horrifying look at supernatural powers, high school cruelty, and teen angst -- and it brings us one of the most memorable and disturbing prom scenes in history.

[Sissy Spacek] can't carry "Carrie" alone, and what she gets for support is nitwit direction by Brian DePalma of a nitwit script by Laurence D. Cohen. Go to Full Review

In its bizarre, baroque way "Carrie" is curiously akin to an atoning religious experience -- at its darkest and most fearful. Go to Full Review

A lavishly produced, deftly acted love story, it is also a Gothic tale of the most gruesome dimensions. Go to Full Review

Kye May 25, 2026 That is was this long before seeing on the big screen. See more Scott M Oct 14, 2025 They saw my dirty pillows. See more Aissa P @RT81306559 3 days ago carrie DIDNT overreact (they were so mean to her) but why did she have to kill the teacher too damn. i guess this is more of a psychological trauma horror then a scary horror film that i was expecting (mind you i went in knowing nothing) and i lovvvedddd the prom scene!! great film! See more Fifty T @RT01421419 3 days ago I'd heard about Carrie for years, so I finally watched it before starting the new Flanagan series on Prime. It didn't hold up as well as I hoped. The scares didn't scare me. Fifty years on, the horror feels tame. After all the praise I'd heard, I expected to jump. I never did. The prom sequence is okay, but it didn't hit me the way its reputation promised. As a teen bullying film, though, it does that job pretty well. I can see why the camerawork shocked people in 1976. Split screens, extreme low-angle tracking shots, slow motion and rotating 360-degree moves felt fresh then. You can feel a director testing new tricks in every scene. Sissy Spacek's acting is a big reason to watch. A young John Travolta, years before Saturday Night Fever, is fun to spot too. 6.5/10: Watch it for the history and the acting, not the fear. It's a film I respect more than I enjoy. See more dede W @RT37612585 Oct 27, 2026 Omg this movie was good tho my first time watching, I’m currently on a Carrie series run to see how much it upgraded, this why nobody should bully anyone because you never know what they got going back at home, (spoilers). And that slow girl who should be grateful enough to survive here if I was Carrie I would’ve came and look for her See more Mate P @matepolcz Oct 25, 2026 Carrie is an exaggeration, but a really fucking good one. I've seen, experienced bullying, but that was nowhere near this. I don't know if this was (or is) common in the US, but it seems like an exaggeration to me. Therefore it can be taken literally or as a metaphor. I loved the characters, especially Carrie, the teacher and Tommy. I always knew what was gonna happen, the sense of tragedy was there from the first moment. I kept guessing who was in on it, which was really fun (I only realized a few minutes before it happened). For me some silly reasonings and lines kept this movie from being perfect. The directing is amazing, the tension was real. The cinematography is out of this world, the lighting and use of color is probably the best I've seen. The editing is amazing as well, the jumpscares are unexpected and pretty terrifying. The score, casting and acting are absolutely perfect. Sissy Spacek nailed all the different aspects of the character. Carrie has no Oscars. How? See more Read all reviews
