Phony’s a strange, enthralling mix -- a naturalistic coming-of-age comedy and a heightened thriller that leaves you also questioning what is and isn’t real. If its second half doesn’t derail, it’ll be a special show. Go to Full Review Chris Vognar Boston Globe 5 days ago
The performances ring true and the darkness coexists with an almost chipper quirkiness. “Phony” doesn’t really feel like anything else out there. It’s no phony. Go to Full Review Ben Rosenstock AV Club Oct 21, 2026

As in early Twin Peaks, the urgency to get to the root of Phony’s central mystery is matched or even exceeded by the enjoyment of hanging out in its idiosyncratic world. Go to Full Review Jean Henegan Pop Culture Maniacs 3 days ago

Nivola is a great lead here, charming, frazzled, empathetic – he’s the guy you would have liked to have been friends with when you were in high school. Go to Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba Oct 27, 2026
I like it. I’m invested in the characters. It’s a neat mystery. But unless Damon Lindelof is lurking somewhere behind the scenes, I don’t see how this resolves satisfyingly. Go to Full Review Grant Hermanns Screen Rant Oct 26, 2026
8/10
Led by Sam Nivola and Connie Britton, the first four episodes of Phony immediately set a very unique tone upon itself that proves immediately absorbing before it even gets into the real core of its mystery. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

sam M @Brinksman 11 hrs ago Looking for something truly original and mind-boggling, with great acting and great writing? Look no further than Phony. A breath of much-needed fresh air. Yu may not laugh out loud, but you WILL laugh. Has all the makings of a classic. See more Eberly W @eberlywayfain99 1 day ago One of the most intriguing new shows I've watched in a while. The writing is sharp, the performances are excellent and there's this constant feeling that something is just slightly off. Connie Britton and Sam Nivola are fantastic together, and the show does a great job balancing dark humor with genuine suspense. It's strange, unsettling and completely addictive. A really refreshing take on the mystery genre!! Highly recommend See more Patty W @DubbleDutch 1 day ago Quirky. Very entertaining. See more Rupesh S @rupesh215 4 days ago Unique. Riveting. Great ensemble. What more can you ask for in a mystery/thriller. See more Chris B @KidCrooks 6 days ago One of those shows that doesn’t come around much, like Widows Bay this year from AppleTV. Outstanding so far!! See more Jackson M @Nshvlleindie Oct 28, 2026 23 minutes/episode is killing the show. Incredible material, perfect cast, addictive story. The serious problem is that the DNA of the show is investigative; delving deep into a mystery. This abruptly short episode structure seems ridiculous...I have to believe someone at the studio pointed out how bad the episode length is, but was overruled. If these episodes were 2-in-1 this would honestly be a 5-star review, but the halting nature of the show is too irritating. See more Read all reviews
