Dave S @RT68722908 Sep 3 When handed a decent budget, B-movie king Roger Corman proved that he could throw together a pretty decent movie. 1967’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre is a good example. The story is well-known: Al Capone (Jason Robards) orders a hit on rival gang-leader Bugs Moran (Ralph Meeker) in pre-Depression Chicago, leading to the mass killing that took place on February 14, 1929. While Robards initially feels miscast as the ruthless Capone, he actually does a pretty decent job in his portrayal of the mercurial criminal. The supporting cast is solid throughout, the period details are excellent, and the movie, overall, has a nicely polished feel to it. Of course, there is the nagging problem of the narrator to deal with, who pops up constantly with character details that are generally unnecessary, serving no purpose other than to annoy the audience. See more rhinohouse T @RT02626021 06/09/2024 I was born quite near and grew up in the neighborhood where the Massacre took place in the Lincoln Park/Clark Street area of Chicago where the shooting to place. I was quite interested in the streets & locations listed in the movie where I lived and had apartments over the years. It seemed to stick to the facts quite well. However, the cast was nothing like I imagined the true historical characters involved. Jason Robards was a great actor. BUT he could never be the tough, Italian Al Capone. One bright star stood out in the movie-Young Bruce Dern as the reluctant, shy mechanic with a family and bills to pay gets caught up in the whole mess and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jason Robards absolutely kills it as Capone See more Simon T @Bucksplit 08/05/2023 King of the Bs, Roger Corman, delivers one of his best films with this low-budget straightforward penny dreadful melodrama centering on the 1920s turf wars between rival gangsters, the more famous of which of course is Al Capone (non lookalike Jason Robards). You'll forget who's who within seconds, but it doesn't matter because the plot is as simple as they come: a kind of cut-price Godfather, seemingly shot entirely on the Fox backlog.
