Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place.

What lingers is not a sense of evil but exhilaration in how far Argento and his fellow filmmakers were willing to go to shock and delight; the movie's sheer exuberance is the cinematic equivalent of a blood transfusion.

Argento accomplishes so much simply through lighting and music - which goes a long way to compensate for the stilted dialogue and awkward character interactions.

The dialogue is kind of goofy at times, but to me, that is part of the charm. My problem with Suspiria is that with a run time of only an hour and 40 minutes, it somehow feels like a 2 hour + movie.

Suspiria, directed by Dario Argento, is less a conventional horror film and more a sensory assault defined by style and atmosphere. Set in a mysterious ballet academy, the film follows an American dancer who uncovers a sinister secret lurking beneath its elegant surface. Argento prioritizes mood over narrative coherence, using vivid, almost surreal color palettes and the haunting score by Goblin to create a constant sense of dread. Jessica Harper’s performance grounds the film, but it’s the audiovisual design that truly dominates, turning each scene into a nightmarish tableau. While the plot can feel thin at times, Suspiria remains a landmark of Italian horror for its bold artistic vision and influence.

I liked how much we saw of the characters in this movie and felt like I could understand Suzy’s personality type. I was not expecting certain gross and shocking moments, I like the mystery of the plot. This movie had its own vibe and I would have thought it to be released in the mid 80s at first impression.

Suspiria is honestly more about the vibe than the story. The colors, music, and creepy atmosphere carry the whole movie. Plot wise it’s kinda simple and a bit confusing at times, but that’s not really the point. It feels like a fever dream in a good way.
