Kevin P Dec 30 A great adaptation of the classic novel about desperation for the American Dream during the Great Depression. The classic characters of George and Lenny are played wonderfully by director Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. Candy the old man is very likable, and you feel so bad when he's coerced into putting down his old dog. The colorful landscape cinematography is great. You really hope that everyone can make things work when Candy proposes to help George and Lenny with the property. The movie updates the book's more controversial elements with a nice subversion about racial and sexist stereotypes by giving some emotional depth about their isolation and rigid roles in society causing them to lash out. It makes it all the more heartbreaking when Lenny causes an accident and George has to take him out as peacefully as possible before anyone else can get their hands on him. It's a heartbreaking ending about the fading American Dream and a great adaptation of this literary classic. Great story, expertly written and very professionally brought to screen. Whole stellar cast shines in character, Malkovich is exceptional. Very moving and memorable.
