When timid bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) discovers a magical mask containing the spirit of the Norse god Loki, his entire life changes. While wearing the mask, Ipkiss becomes a supernatural playboy exuding charm and confidence which allows him to catch the eye of local nightclub singer Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). Unfortunately, under the mask's influence, Ipkiss also robs a bank, which angers junior crime lord Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), whose goons get blamed for the heist.

Critics Consensus

It misses perhaps as often as it hits, but Jim Carrey's manic bombast, Cameron Diaz' blowsy appeal, and the film's overall cartoony bombast keep The Mask afloat.

Carrey holds his own with the special effects, and even keeps from being upstaged by Milo, the mighty Jack Russell terrier.

When his face turns green and his limbs get limber, Carrey's pretty much unstoppable. This cartoon-y creation is an amazing fusion of physical comedy and state-of-the- art cinema illusion.

Like the mask, the film is a perfect fit -- and a perfect showcase -- for Carrey's substantial talents.

Utilizing wonderful dual turns from its lead and fantastic Oscar-nominated visual effects, The Mask remains one of Jim Carrey's most fun & wildly entertaining films from when he was at the height of his stardom.

Given any thought, the morality of the film is, itself, questionable as it tries to let Ipkiss ride off into the sunset with Tina without paying for crimes he is responsible for regardless of whether he did them while wearing the enchanted mask or not.

The Mask is a childhood favorite. I love Jim Carey and his classic comedy. it was a treat to see this in the theatre all these years later.

Still absolutely hilarious after over 30 years. Some of the clips are just legendary and the small child in me laughs again loud. Jim Carrey at his finest.
