Critics Consensus

Sense and Sensibility is an uncommonly deft, very funny Jane Austen adaptation, marked by Emma Thompson's finely tuned performance.

Perhaps we should have been aware that Thompson could write as well as she can act... But it is still a pleasant shock to see a film so divested of precious charm in favour of humor, dramatic force and the kind of romance that isn't merely sentimental.

Thompson plucks out the novelist's delicate wit, while Lee, a master of domestic dramady, takes Austen gently over the top in a prankish farce with just enough heartburn to elicit the occasional covert sob.

The film radiates hope amid economic and social disparity, as you root for the Dashwoods to thrive and feel independent and loved. It’s an astonishing film you can revisit at different stages of life and still feel inspired each time.

Sense and Sensibility is Austen at her greatest and movie-making at its best. It has it all: passion, humor, wit, great performances and a story that touches the heart.

The latest and best adaption of a Jane Austen novel, it blows straight to smithereens any idea that a 19th-century British comedy of manners must be a little stuffy. This movie is smart, keen, funny and engaging as any 20th-century romance.

This movie is so beautiful on the big screen and holds up after 30 years as a moving and witty film. Its also aptly the 250 anniversary of Jane Austen birth.
