Mm M @Sarahzee Jan 23 This film touched me personally through its exploration of the uneasy triangle between human love, physical desire, and God—one of the most painful and unresolved questions of existence. I was glad to see this tension addressed on screen. Ralph Fiennes is, as ever, mesmerizing, he just commands the screen; his eyes alone carry a magnetic intensity, delivering a performance of remarkable restraint and power. That said, the film seemed to aspire to greater depth. A more sustained exploration of the characters and a deeper engagement with the central ordeal could have elevated it further. Still, this does not diminish the strength of the performances and the soundtrack which remain consistently excellent across the cast. The story is heartbreakingly real, the plot intelligently adapted and the characters are finely fleshed out and defined in the performances of Ralph Fiennes, Julianne Moore and Stephen Rea. What was most important to me was the exceptional alchemic balance among the trio in this painful affair played out against World War II. The sensuality of the sexual encounters between Moore and Fiennes makes the absence of that between Moore and her kind hearted husband all the more believable and meaningful.
