Fanny (Frances O'Connor), born into a poor family, is sent away to live with wealthy uncle Sir Thomas (Harold Pinter), his wife (Lindsay Duncan) and their four children, where she'll be brought up for a proper introduction to society. She is treated unfavorably by her relatives, except for her cousin Edmund (Jonny Lee Miller), whom she grows fond of. However, Fanny's life is thrown into disarray with the arrival of worldly Mary Crawford (Embeth Davidtz) and her brother Henry (Alessandro Nivola).

If you are looking for something similar to the book, this is NOT it. It’s absolutely heartbreaking how butchered Fanny’s character is. Women can be sweet and quiet and still be worthy of respect. This movie takes a very feminist approach, which I would ordinarily approve of, except it erases Fannys character, implying that women like her book personality are not worthy. It also ironically sexualizes her to no end, to an extremely focused male gaze. The plots are dramatically changed as well and very little matches the time period. If you pretend it is not a book adaptation, it is fine (but still overtly sexualizing if it’s female characters for a film, especially one that is supposed to be focused on a woman fighting injustice). As a Jane Austen fan, this movie is endlessly disappointing. If it cannot be accurate, why must it also be sexist?

If you are looking for a movie close to the book, then this is a horrible representation. I’ve only left a few reviews in my life, but this deserved a scathing review. They butchered Fanny Price’s character as well as Sir Thomas’ character. Fanny is portrayed as outgoing and adventurous and Sir Thomas is portrayed as a lecherous immoral man. As a stand alone movie, it might be good, but not for Jane Austen fans.

This is really very good, excellent performances from actors well cast. Abridged and amended Austen it might be but there is significant passion, substantial pathos, and a well paced plot with plenty of intrigue.

Enjoyable romp, but it takes so many liberties with the story, it's at times unrecognisable. I watched it immediately after reading the book, so the story was fresh in my mind.
