In terms of Shakespearean scholarship, "10 Things," directed with more energy than style by Gil Junger, may be but a footnote. But when they write the teen-flick book, this goes to the front of the class.

Who knew that Shakespeare dude could be so entertaining? References to him abound in this messy but enjoyable movie right down to the use of a remake of Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." But you don't have to be a fan of the Bard to like this affable film.

A solid, honest romantic comedy that doesn’t aim to reinvent the genre but comfortably inhabits its rules. The film works mainly thanks to the natural chemistry between Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, which gives emotional credibility to a simple, unpretentious story. Its humor is light and functional, never invasive, and its tone avoids forced dramatism, opting instead for emotional simplicity. Built on clichés and predictable archetypes, it never tries to hide what it is, and that sincerity plays in its favor. Visually and musically it remains basic and serviceable, always at the service of the characters. While it loses impact with each rewatch and doesn’t fully captivate on a deeper level, it remains an effective, charming and kind piece of rom-com cinema. Not essential, but pleasant.
