Robert P @Superbad Oct 23, 2026 The Pledge is a *3* star Movie! See more John W @RebelBass Oct 21, 2026 One of my all time favorite movies! See more Tim B @SlimTim0707 Oct 6, 2026 The Pledge is well cast and has an honest effort for originality behind it, however the climax may leave something to be desired. I've concluded that I don't have a problem with the film's destination, but how it got there could have been done more smoothly. At a certain point, the slow pace of the movie abruptly goes from 20 mph to 65, which may leave you feeling bewildered at best and betrayed at worst. Nonetheless, Nicholson is able to show a new wrinkle for the part. There are very complex themes at work behind The Pledge, surrounding the consequences that can happen when you try and prove something when there's nothing left to prove. I liken it to an elite and accomplished boxer, who against all advice, continues to fight on well past his expiration date. He may think that what he's doing is admirable, but to all observers, he's a shell of what he once was, and a danger to himself, and the team around him serve as enablers, while against their better judgement. Jack Nicholson gives a quietly devastating performance as a retiring cop who makes an oath he simply cannot let go of. Sean Penn’s direction relies on thick atmosphere and deliberate pacing rather than cheap thrills. The deliberate subversion of standard mystery tropes might frustrate anyone expecting a clean Hollywood resolution, but as a somber study of a man unspooling, it remains a thoroughly compelling watch. Jack staying lost in the woods without returning home made the ending feel incomplete. It would have made more sense if he had gone back with the little girl’s mother, apologized, and then discovered the car accident on the way home, which would have tied the events together better." See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom Apr 19, 2026 The Pledge is a compelling mystery film that keeps you engaged with its slow-burning, atmospheric approach. Rather than relying on constant twists, it builds tension through mood, character, and a deeply unsettling investigation that sticks with you. Jack Nicholson delivers a strong performance as a retiring detective who becomes obsessively involved in one last case. His portrayal adds weight to the story, making the character’s descent into obsession feel believable and tragic. The supporting cast also helps ground the film in a realistic and uneasy world. What makes the movie stand out is its patience. It takes its time unfolding the mystery, focusing more on psychological depth than quick answers. The tone is somber and reflective, which fits the subject matter well. Overall, The Pledge is a thoughtful and engaging mystery drama that leaves a lasting impression. A solid 8/10.
