Critics Consensus

Sleek and shiny on the surface, The Fast and the Furious recalls those cheesy teenage exploitation flicks of the 1950s.

A gritty and gratifying cheap thrill, Rob Cohen's high-octane hot-car meller is a true rarity these days, a really good exploitationer, the sort of thing that would rule at drive-ins if they still existed.

While few of the paper-thin characters register long enough to make much of an impression, Diesel carries the movie with his unsettling mix of Zen-like tranquillity and barely controlled rage.

The Fast and the Furious may be derivative, and it’s honestly difficult to see the future billion-dollar franchise lurking inside, but at the same time it is cleanly made, unpretentious, and competently staged.

There's one thing it has never lost: the desire to make the movies a gathering place even for those who don't usually find many reasons to go and to recognize the act of going to see a movie as it was intended, for the masses. [Full review in Spanish]

It's a product of its time, for better and for worse. Every audiovisual element, from the image texture to the colourful production design, the fashion, and the music, tells us we're watching a 2001 production. [Full review in Spanish].

Nothing against the movie. The color was off with the picture and the sound was not good at the theater we watched it at.
