Critics Consensus

Showtime starts out as a promising satire of the buddy cop genre. Unfortunately, it ends up becoming the type of movies it is satirizing.

The comedy may have been a hit-and-miss affair. But at least it’s fun watching the stoic Robert De Niro and the wisecracking Eddie Murphy trading quips and one-liners. Go to Full Review Judith Egerton Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY) Jun 25, 2004

Robert P @Superbad Oct 5, 2026 Showtime is a 1.5 star Movie! See more Jonathan N @Popculture1994 Jul 17, 2026 Showtime is an awful Eddie Murphy, Robert De Niro, and Rene Russo buddy cop comedy movie. It's the worst 2002 Eddie Murphy film ever (along with The Adventures of Pluto Nash and I Spy with Owen Wilson as well). See more Melissa M @Lisey Apr 2, 2026 Eddie Murphy has made a lot of action-packed cop movies. The Beverly hill cop films. 48 hours. This is another one. In the cop genre films he does an beyond awesome job as an actor. This is a pretty good cop-com film. Robert de Niro is really good at deadpan humor. Eddie Murphy's humor is more hyperactive. Or on hyperspeed. And he has an infectious laugh. Eddie Murphy plays an actor who wants to be a detective. Robert de Niro is a seasoned detective who unwillingly has to become an actor on Hollywood version of a cop show. This movie has action, comedy, & drama. This film is definitely watching more than once. See more Mickey B. @Mickerdoo Feb 8, 2026 Actually felt like De Niro and Murphy had some chemistry. But nothing special about the script.
