Critics Consensus

Fans of the stage musical may forgive Rent its flaws, but weak direction, inescapable staginess and an irritating faux-boho pretension prevent the film from connecting on screen.

Rent is best enjoyed singing it loudly at the top of your lungs, dancing until you break a sweat, and the collapsing exhausted against your couch with your best friends.

Chris Columbus, who managed to suck the magic out of the first two Harry Potter films, does the same with this adaptation.

A catchy (if occasionally clunky) score and some good performances make up for the helmer’s lack of imagination.

Rent is an unfortunate misfire of a musical adaptation, featuring mostly unremarkable music and a mixed narrative that merely meanders for two hours due to its lack of substance.

Rent has very little to do with this musical. It's about people with HIV/AIDS running out the clock with love/romance before they get evicted from life.

An intense story, with heavy subjects and very sad losses, and great music.

It's become a yearly tradition for us to watch Rent, and honestly, it never gets old. It's just such a fun movie with some incredibly catchy songs that you'll be humming for days, and underneath all the spectacle, it truly has a lot of heart. What's surprising is that some of the songs I initially found the cheesiest are now the ones that consistently move me the most.
