What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a strong cast, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 suffers under the excesses of Tony Scott's frantic direction, and fails to measure up to the 1974 original.

This is pointless, redundant, irrelevant film remaking, in which nothing of weight is ever at stake, and no relationships are ever formed. Go to Full Review Ed Koch The Atlantic Jan 17, 2018
The original film was far superior and will be remembered in years to come while the current remake will soon be forgotten. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 12, 2017

Gone are the days when a thriller about hijackers and the negotiator-hero who stops them feels fresh or necessary. At least, that’s how I felt after The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Go to Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Aug 25, 2022

The sub-par material is too much to overcome. I especially hate to see such a strong Denzel performance go to waste, but in reality there just isn’t enough here to make this anything more than an average movie. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Nov 29, 2020

Not quite as slick as the original, this latest take on the subway heist story still accomplishes entertainment at breakneck speed. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Jacob W @RT17896586 Oct 27, 2026 This is a remake of the same name. Despite its cast and its cleaver use of the camera by using slow motion shots which is very good. There’s not much to say about this s movie. My expectations were high as the Scott brothers in this case Tony normally deliver. However in this while still good it’s not as good as what you would expect from this director. Still very enjoyable. See more Fro T @frothizzlereviews Sep 18, 2026 Denzel has a subdued performance, but still shows up with his A-game, and Travolta is having a bunch of fun in a villainous role. Is it perfect? Of course not. But I enjoy this remake. Luis Guzman deserved better, though. 8/10 See more J H @UpstateNYThriller Aug 28, 2026 7/10 Thriller Suspense Good movie Denzel Washington is taking down John Travolta as a hostage taker on an NYC Train See more Geoff G @GGinFla Aug 2, 2026 Not as good as the original, but still entertaining. One of the few remakes that is actually decent. The ending is a bit disappointing. Just an entertaining, middle-of-the-pack action flick. See more Read all reviews
