Among the numerous characters looking for love and fun are impulsive artist Ellie (Janeane Garofalo) and punks Tom (Casey Affleck) and Dave (Guillermo Diaz), who meet up with Stephie (Gaby Hoffmann) and Val (Christina Ricci), two girls from Long Island. Also interacting with various partygoers are a pensive bartender (Ben Affleck) and a taxi driver (Dave Chappelle) who operates a disco in his cab.

A clumsy and scattered comedy with a poorly executed script.

The female creative team of [Director Risa Bramon] Garcia and writer Shanna Larson drove a set of storylines that centered women's frank sexuality in a way that still isn't as mainstream as it should be.

There's no sign of the writerly derring-do that is really essential to daisy-chain storytelling.

We frequently look past a subpar movie's terrible script or acting as long as it contains good special effects or cinematography, but we rarely extend the same courtesy to good costuming. How boring.

Revisiting 200 Cigarettes reveals a film that isn't quite as good as I remembered, often feeling disjointed and, at times, fairly poorly written. The dialogue lacks the punch needed to sustain its ensemble energy, yet there is an undeniable charm in its messy ambition. I still kinda love the sheer amount of cameos, and the earnest attempt at a Linklater-style "slice of life" narrative that captures the frantic, nicotine-stained pulse of a 1981 New Year's Eve in the East Village. Even if the execution is clunky, the nostalgic atmosphere and the star-studded cast make it a cult curiosity worth a watch.

My partner and I watch this film every New Years Eve! It's a fun movie to get you in the mood for the New Year! A great cast of many amazing people like Martha Plimpton, Dave Chappelle, and Courtney Love! Check it out this December 31st!

I grew up in New York and I remember when going to the East Village was the height of sophistication. This movie brings back the pointless aimlessness of nights trying to have a good time and meet someone to love (forever or temporarily). I had nights like this, so I love it. And the soundtrack is like listening to the radio back then. Eclectic and excellent. It’s not perfect, but I had some laughs and enjoyed seeing baby versions of current celebrities. Courtney Love was adorable.
