One of the quintessential erotic classics of the 1980s, it centers on the volatile relationship between a sexually curious woman and a sexually insecure man. Together, they engage in various libertine experiences—testing their desires, fantasies, and boundaries—featuring iconic scenes that surely sparked plenty of sexual creativity (the kitchen scene is impossible to forget) and a surprising conclusion that makes this an unconventional story. Its insistence on eroticism becomes repetitive and exhausting, confusing intensity with depth. The relationship develops without emotional construction, demanding acceptance instead of discovery. The pacing is rushed and inorganic, and the lack of context for the protagonist weakens any sense of progression. Visually, Adrian Lyne shows competence, with effective use of light and atmosphere, though it reinforces an already excessive erotic tone. The music is the most consistently strong element, adding emotional weight where the script fails. Kim Basinger delivers a precise, vulnerable performance, while Mickey Rourke’s feels rigid and unengaging. A few scenes stand out, but overall the film feels empty, draining, and circular, leaving the viewer with relief rather than reflection when it ends. The film also hits the ending correctly when she discovers that the Mickey O'Roark character is sadistic in his pursuit of invulnerability.
