The pacing is rushed and inorganic, and the lack of context for the protagonist weakens any sense of progression. Visually, Adrian Lyne shows competence, with effective use of light and atmosphere, though it reinforces an already excessive erotic tone. The music is the most consistently strong element, adding emotional weight where the script fails. Kim Basinger delivers a precise, vulnerable performance, while Mickey Rourke’s feels rigid and unengaging. A few scenes stand out, but overall the film feels empty, draining, and circular, leaving the viewer with relief rather than reflection when it ends. The film also hits the ending correctly when she discovers that the Mickey O'Roark character is sadistic in his pursuit of invulnerability.
