Decades after the disappearance of her uncle during Argentina's Dirty War, filmmaker Marialuisa Ernst joins the Caravan of Mothers, a group of Central American women who travel by bus along the migrant route in search of their loved ones who have disappeared trying to reach the U.S. Their stories intertwine across generations and geographies, the film becomes a powerful testament to resilience, memory, hope, and solidarity. A PLACE OF ABSENCE is a lyrical and profoundly moving documentary that explores unresolved grief, boundless love, and the unbreakable strength of women.

Heartbreaking, profound and poetic. A Place of Absence isn't just a protest for truth and justice; it's also a protest for equanimity and, above all, democracy. Go to Full Review

An impressive way to create a presence for those who have gone missing, not only asserting their place on the record, but fleshing them out as more than statistics. Go to Full Review

What makes "A Place of Absence" work for me isn’t simply its exploration of grief, but its recognition of how disappearance transcends nationality...the emotional landscape is shared even if the histories differ. Go to Full Review

Yanet C @TheCubanStorm Oct 23, 2026 A Masterpiece That Breaks Your Heart and Heals Your Soul. I am speechless. One of the most powerful films I have ever witnessed. Marialuisa Ernst deserves an Oscar. A Place of Absence is devastatingly beautiful. Cathartic. Healing. It gives pain a name and silence a voice. Across borders and three generations, it weaves together the wounds of migration, disappearance, and the unbearable love of mothers searching for their daughters and sons. How do you mourn someone who may still be alive? How do you find peace when you cannot find the person you love? This is more than an immigrant story. It is a story of humanity, of love that refuses to surrender, of grief passed from one generation to the next. Some wounds transcend borders. Some absences last generations. And some love never stops searching. Thank you, Marialuisa, for turning unspeakable pain into something so profoundly beautiful. See more
