The Landrys gather for the weekend to fix up their family home in Chicago. Graham (Josh Radnor) really wishes his life was in a better place, especially since he's reconnected with his college crush, Dana (Chandra Russell). Sue (Becky Ann Baker) is looking forward to the next chapter in her life when an incident at her retirement party forces her to question things, including her marriage to complacent Roy (John Ashton). Then, Will (Rob Huebel), the television star blows in. What starts out as a benign family get-together ends up spiraling out of control as some shocking news threatens to tear everything apart.

All Happy Families is suffused by an indie sensibility and the warm tones in which it’s filmed are attractive, if a little clichéd. But its scattergun approach and under-written script prevent it from cohering into more than the sum of its parts.

This movie started off okay, but it moved slow for me and took a while to really get going. The characters only go so far emotionally, and honestly, it gets exhausting. It feels like the director tried to cram in too many plot twists, and every character has their own side story that we’re somehow supposed to care about. It’s hard to connect with anyone because they’re all missing something—very surface-level with bursts of high-stakes drama that don’t always land. You’re left wondering why—why so much is happening, yet none of it feels grounded. The story builds up, then just…stalls. And the ending? It actually made me laugh—not because it was funny, but because they suddenly tried to tie it all up with a last-minute romance that felt completely flat and out of place.

The talents of Haroula Rose (Director and Co-writer) and Coburn Goss, Co-writer, bring a strong sense of realism in this family comedic/drama. The excellent acting adds to the credibility of the complex Landry family. This genre of film is lacking in today's marketplace. The risk is the reward for all who venture to take this well done Indie film into their home. Highly recommend.

Synopsis
