Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri. Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart's downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both men.

It may be titled simply Amadeus but this hugely fun 1980s classic didn’t win eight Oscars for being a straight-up biopic. What made it an enduring cultural touchstone is the framing.

Forman’s Amadeus is a breathtaking, divine tragedy. Amadeus is a beautifully exhilarating, outrageous feast for the eyes and ears. The 4K restoration perfectly preserves the gorgeous look and sound of the theatrical cut of a timeless masterpiece.

If you blank out the historical facts (and as a music history major I have to consciously do so) this story works as a very dark comedy with a clever ironic twist at the end. I enjoyed this film far more than I did forty years ago when I first saw it.

A dramatization of the historical Mozart. Led by two brilliant main leads, especially F. Murray Abraham, the story was told in such a riveting and absorbing way that the 3 hour version flew by quickly. The historical discrepancy and the female lead were a bit less convincing. But it is such a beautiful film that put the music foremost. A great watch.
