It’s absolutely one of those open ended movies that relies on interpretation and doesn’t give a clear cut clean ending but honestly this is one of the best movies in that style that I’ve seen. N.O. trouble aside, he's a star because of his masucline edginess; you don't know if he's going to save the girl or kill her. I'm not a film academic, but an American; we like movies that have an ending, & a satisfying one. This is not that type of movie. It's a road trip diary about a recent generation. The camera is loosely held with never-ending jumpy shots, dialogue you have to strain to hear over rap & rock. Four conversations going on at once in one van. Joyful bursts of adolescent energy that border on danger. Sexual jaded-ness that would be unusual for some kids that age. Drugs. In other words, teen life for disadvantaged kids with nothin' after high school. It is a relief, & hopeful, at the end, when all in the van come to focus, & sing together to "American Honey." Then, you come to understand why the director mixes her jumpy shots with calm, beautiful horizons of the midwest. It definitely reflected a reality few find compelling, but an obvious modern slap of gritty reality. The only future it painted was bleak. It was well filmed, and captivating as it kept both of us waiting. We both wondered if the often celebrated dinner table scenes in Firefly were attempting to be portrayed in the van in the form of glorifying road trip? One massive win was that you were the camera. See more Eric W @RandlePMcMurphy Feb 16 I know there’s probably some sort of meaningful message that I’m supposed to take away from this film, but all I could think about was the fact that I have/had children who were in the post high school age range, and thank God they haven’t gotten into anything like this. These young people seemed like a less violent version of Kubrick’s Clockwork Orange gang. Just a bunch of assholes that you don’t ever wanna run into anywhere. I don’t know if this kinda magazine sales/pimp relationship actually exists in real life, but my goodness this just seems so disgusting to me, although not nearly as wrong as the other pimp relationship scenario. I thought this was gonna be a happy group of young traveling hippies on a long road trip, but instead it was something way worse. See more Horror fan 4 @Horrorfan4life Jan 20 A wild and crazy ride with kids. Shia labeouf leads a wonderful cast as they head on the road Trip of a lifetime selling magazine subscriptions. There's nothing shocking in this movie unless you don't like nudity. I will say though the boss character in this movie was useless.Not a lot of drama but it's still a good watch. I think the story was just so so and really didn't warrant needing almost 3 hours to tell it. That being said the film's appearance is very well done.
