A tender coming-of-age tale about the loss of innocence in the waning days of WWII: it is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum, where 12-year-old Nanning spends his days working the farm and his nights fishing. Despite the hardship, life on the windswept isle seems idyllic. When farmer Tessa (Diane Kruger) mentions to Nanning that the war will soon be over, the boy--too young to understand the political implications--is pleased to imagine that his Nazi officer father might soon be coming home. But word of Germany's imminent defeat sends his mother into decline, and as Nanning looks to his community for support, he learns that the true enemy is far closer than he imagined.

Wonderful coming of age story set right as Germany surrenders about a young boy whose mother is a supporter of Hitler up to the last while the neighbors express their relief that the war is finally ending. Similar to JoJo Rabbit with another fine performance by the child lead.

Quiet on the surface. Something heavier underneath. Amrum doesn’t try to grab you instantly—it settles in slowly, building its world with patience and control. It’s the kind of film that trusts silence more than dialogue, and for the most part, that choice works. There’s a clear sense of atmosphere throughout. The film feels grounded, almost meditative at times, letting moments unfold without rushing them. When it connects, it does so subtly rather than loudly. But that same restraint can feel limiting. At times, it holds back just enough to stop it from becoming truly impactful. Final Verdict: Calm, controlled, and quietly effective—just not unforgettable. Cinema wins. Mediocrity loses.
