Critics Consensus

Annette's experimental approach to its emotional extremes marks an ambitious, if not peculiar, return for director Leos Carax.

Nevertheless it’s remarkable that Carax should want to wrestle his demons so publicly. And it is our privilege that he keeps doing so.

At its core, this is a fraught love story of both romantic and paternal brokenness.

The most damning fault with Annette comes from the mismatch between Driver and Cotillard, not as lovers, but as performers within the logic of the film. Cotillard has a luminous presence, yet her lethargy undermines the film.

Frankly, I find it to be a Carax musical that, despite its aesthetic, becomes terribly banal with each absurd number sung by Adam Driver. [Full review in Spanish]

Despite its often extravagant scale, what with its globe-hopping scale, constant media intrusion, and apparently years-spanning timeline, Annette is ultimately a small, intimate film.

What I liked? The music was phenomenal !.... Amazing sets and costumes. It is an American Art Film. Not sure I understood the metaphor. It starts out very fun but, gets complicated.

Imagine a musical movie written by one of your favorite bands since the late 70s with a great French Director amazing actors .. unbelievable cinematography.. and a robot baby! you are sitting in a beautiful theater in a recliner chair and the sound is amazing. I would have thought I was in a Fredrick Fellini film except the writers Ron and Russell Mael kept showing up in the movie!! I’m so lucky to be a Sparks fan so I found this Gem.. if you are a film student or love foreign films without sub titles this is a must see.. if you love a good movie that the masses won’t see .. this is a must see. If you have ever been to Niagara Falls at 3 am in January you know what I mean!

While I love the actors (and often their specific scenes)....however, the overall movie is one of the very worst movies I have ever watched. I left about 4/5 into the film (as the ship scene began). It is like a cross between "La La Land" and "Lenny" (Bruce)....The film takes pride in its darkness and its moments of profane plot.
