Tom and Gerri as the movie opens, are the only characters who lead a productive life involved in a stable marriage of equals. Mary, Gerri’s friend from work, is the most tragic person appearing from the beginning to the very end. With essentially no insight in her behavior as she interacts with others, she lives in a continuing shipwreck in a sea of white wine and failed amorous attachments. It is quite a pessimistic description of English society. The son of Tom and Gerri succeeds in finding a partner as well grounded as his own mother, so there is some hope about the future. Another couple but this is no cat and mouse partnership trying to bash each other over the head or taking part in constant squabbling. Their love is deep as husband and wife but there's a certain smugness about them as they entertain their social misfit friends. You can't help wondering that's the reason why they are invited to stay for the weekend or the odd night. So they can watch their socially inept chums fall about the place after too much alcohol, baring their pathetic souls out....to Tom and Gerri whilst they sit their nodding in some sort of bonded understanding. Well Gerri is an NHS shrink so she probably enjoys these oddball characters as her friends. The movie is like a magazine you fish out from the back of the seat on a long flight. You've nothing else to do, so might as well watch it and in parts, it's quite interesting only you want to shuttle forwards at times to get past the fairly frequent boring bits. Throughout the film, their kitchen table serves as a high court where they sit in silent judgment of their "lesser" friends. The treatment of Mary is particularly grueling. They offer her tea and sympathy while exchanging "can-you-believe-this?" glances over her head. They don't truly help her; they observe her like a specimen in a jar. Whether it’s a divorced Mary or a troubled Carl, Tom and Gerri remain perched on a pedestal, acting aloof and "above it all." Their happiness feels performative, fed by the constant reassurance that they are better than the lonely people in their orbit. Leigh is a master of realism, but here, the tone is mean-spirited. You leave the film realizing the central couple isn't the heart of the story—they are the most judgmental characters in it. A well-acted but deeply frustrating experience. See more Graham F @RT79877822 02/11/2025 What a brilliant film I was feeling pretty poor with flu or something so this mb wasn't the best choice when you are already feeling grim but am so glad I watched it. The acting is superb. The 'stereotypes' are spot-on. It had a sense (from the start) that something awful was going to happen but thankfully nothing did, I cared for the each of the characters, apart from son Carl, so wanted them to be ok. They weren't all ok tho as the theme running in it seems to be drink altho everyone in it drinks. Some just drink more successfully than others and no-one in the film chastises others for drinking. I found the 'WINTER' part the most compelling as a new character (Ronnie) appeared and there are some fantastic scenes with him and Mary, who is in it throughout. The successful, educated characters in the film were all very good people but, as in real life, they know how to talk to match the situation. The two less fortunate characters' dialogue with each other was much more raw. Mary talked out of nervousness and Ronnie didn't feel the need to talk unless he had something to say. There was quite a haunting scene at the end where these two characters were left in silence during very realistic dinner-table chat amongst the others. Unlike "Secrets and Lies," where Mike Leigh showed remarkable compassion for all of his characters, "Another Year" presents the "misfit" characters as merely pitiable. Do NOT watch this if you are single, in any way awkward or insecure about anything, or have ever felt like an outsider.
