Leigh, an ambitious young real estate agent, is asked to sell a house with a dubious past. When she finds the runaway daughter of the couple trying to sell the home, Leigh becomes entangled with a supernatural force with sinister plans.

Critics Consensus

At the Devil's Door has no shortage of creepy style -- unfortunately, that isn't enough to distract from an uninspired story that never capitalizes on its potential.

McCarthy shows he's mastered the things we already know scare us onscreen; next, how about something we don't expect?

Though disappointing content-wise, McCarthy's sophomore feature still demonstrates admirable attention to things that usually suffer in more superficially flashy horror efforts ...

While some uneven plotting and awkward moments in character development mar the process, this is an illustrative example of how capably creepy independent American horror films still have the potential to be.

At The Devil's Door is not a horror movie that has much splatter, dialogue or, when taking the long view, originality. What it does have is real horror, which is the element most required here.

Writer-director Nicholas McCarthy's At The Devil's Door is a fright vehicle that dutifully tingles from time to time but somehow still feels strained in its creepy convictions. [An] atmospheric boofest...

In my opinion, this is a great psychological horror story. It stuck with me, which not all horror movies do. I haven't any idea why it's rated so poorly. I think some people don't "get" psychological horror.. anyway, I highly recommend it.

At the Devil's Door is a competently made film overall, but pushes no boundaries and doesn't really develop any sense of consistent tension. It's a postmodern horror, trying to take advantage of the shift towards slow-burn pacing to trick you into thinking that meandering = scary. Muddy rules to the universe, slim character development, and a lack of scares make this feature a relatively timid horror flick overall; there's not much in the heat of the moment to make your hair stand on end, nor in the implications of the film's demonic presence (think the wide-ranging implications left at the ending of Rosemary's Baby, there's nothing comparable here). Easily skippable. (2/5)

I think I may respect Nicolas McCarthy in the director's chair, but he needs to get involved with better written films. 4.4/10

It's a decent horror. It has some scares, good acting and a serviceable plot. It's not the most unique story but imo the plot is executed very well. And between scares there's still a tense vibe that's eerie. If you've got nothing else to watch I think you could do a lot worse than this.
