The death and funeral of their father brings three sisters to the home of their mother, Violet (Meryl Streep), an acid-tongued, pill-popping cancer patient. Daughters Barbara (Julia Roberts), Karen (Juliette Lewis) and Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) -- along with their significant others and various other kin -- take the full brunt of their dysfunctional matriarch's venom, for Violet tells every one of them exactly what she thinks of them. Based on the play by Tracy Letts.

Critics Consensus

The sheer amount of acting going on in August: Osage County threatens to overwhelm, but when the actors involved are as talented as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, it's difficult to complain.

August: Osage County is about morally flawed, sometimes cruel, and often unlikable women. And that's what makes August: Osage County good.

Nothing makes you feel better about your dysfunctional family at the holidays than watching a messed-up clan unravel on screen, only armed with better zingers and prettier faces. That describes this adaptation of Tracy Letts's star-studded drama.

The film's director, John Wells... is never able to escape from the theatrical origins of this over-heated drama, though lovers of the Edward Albee style of marital confrontation will doubtless revel in the melodrama

Between the explosive and deeply personal acting, tightly confined spaces, and webs of dangling intermittent issues, in 'August', we feel like we're in the midst of a really great play.

The best performance comes from Julia Roberts, who hadn’t been this good in over a decade.

The family dynamics feel real and authentic in most cases, however some scenes and narrative pieces are very contrived.

Revisited this film. Its actually got better over time. Its one of those fly on the wall scripts where you get to see perspectives that are both uncomfortable and touching. The acting is across the board brilliant.

Not a film for people who do not like portrayals of real life. Great directing, acting, and screenplay.

I won't fault Tubi for this, it's my bad for clicking on it. Obvi the star power was a draw but I should have read the warnings in advance. This movie had no reason to be made. Best thing that came out of it was seeing Juliet Lewis play this type of character. Meryl...I didn't think I would ever say this, but...it's ok to turn certain projects down.

Every five minutes or less, there is dialogue that no human being has ever uttered or will utter, and it falls off a cliff of who knows what before I stop watching an don't finish, but the dialogue and acting that is good, maybe a third of the time, is incredible. Acting class, but also an acting class of when to question the bulls*** words you'r tasked with saying. I rolled my eyes at least ten times before I stopped watching. Who the f*** wrote the stilted, terrible dialogue? Rhetorical.

Ugly, funny, and painfully true. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY doesn’t flinch, and neither does its ensemble.
