In this zany sequel, time-traveling duo Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown return from saving Marty's future son from disaster, only to discover their own time transformed. In this nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Marty's father has been murdered and Biff Tannen, Marty's nemesis, has profited. After uncovering the secret to Biff's success -- a sports almanac from the future -- Marty and the Doc embark on a quest to repair the space-time continuum.

Critics Consensus

Back to the Future II is far more uneven than its predecessor, but its madcap highs outweigh the occasionally cluttered machinations of an overstuffed plot.

While the funny-bone is being gently tickled, the eye is constantly diverted. Unfortunately, and I find this true of every Zemeckis movie, neither the mind nor the heart is ever fully engaged.

A surprisingly oppressive, rapid-fire, noisy, gadget-filled action picture lacking the emotion of the original film.

Like fellow second child Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, it had to contend with doltish charges of being too cold.

This second time around... is calculated and often tired, technically accomplished but lacking the first's energy and imagination.

The Treatment (Substack)

It’s 100-ish minutes of Zemeckis and Gale caricaturizing the very enterprise that’s backing Part II (and pop culture on the whole) into this corner of gross commercialization.

The second time around, Back to the Future gives us another sci-fi-fueled thrill ride, full of funny and intense moments that made the movie so enjoyable. While it didn't come true, I still like this movie's depiction of life in 2015, and it is always interesting to see what people in the 20th century thought the beginning of the next century would look like. I definitely recommend this for sci-fi fans!
