Don J Jul 10, 2021 Saw the new 4K remaster of Basic Instinct (2021) produced by Rialto Pictures and Studio Canal. The transfer was really good and clean and felt fresh for a movie that is almost 30 years old. I had not seen this movie in about 15 years, so seeing it on the big screen felt pretty fresh. Is Basic Instinct a great movie? No. But, I think it was a bold movie for it's time to take on some really explicit material including sexual and sadistic violence, which many producers didn't have the courage to take on before. The movie's main strength is the electrifying chemistry between Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. It is masterfully executed, with the eroticism pushed to the limit in the famous leg-crossing scene—a moment that inspired numerous similar films and, years later, a (less compelling) sequel. Iconic. See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 14, 2026 Basic Instinct is a terrific, erotic thriller. It is exactly what an erotic thriller ought to be. Dangerous. Made in homage to Alfred Hitchcock and likewise his composer, Bernard Hermann, Paul Verhoeven and Jerry Goldsmith marry energetic direction to melodramatic music, and the actors throw themselves into the bedroom frenzy with aplomb. I don't know if Basic Instinct officially kicked off the craze for erotic themes in movies and TV (a slam-dance, Douglas called it), but it was definitely in there, a progenitor. The movie was the making of Sharon Stone's career. Her subsequent whinging, well, women are incorrigibly feminine sometimes, now aren't they? For the record, the uncrossing the legs scene has never impressed me one iota. The intercourse, however, is blistering hot. The slayings are also very gory. Not for the nervous or the prudish.
