Lanfranco C @Lanfrancobz 06/02/2024 James Mason is the real main character. He is the mastermind. See more Lon A @Lon171717 08/02/2023 Good movie, holds up well for being a 1966 Film. See more Michael W @RT14564566 07/08/2023 Great movie with original aircraft See more CodyZamboni @CodyZamboni 06/25/2023 Movie is about the extreme ruthless lengths and life threatening dangers a common man pilot in WW1 Germany will go to get the coveted title award. Compelling aerial battle action, hair raising stunts, and a focused arrogant performance by George Peppard, sell this movie. Bonus, eye opening hot sex scene with Ursula Andress, wearing a barely there towel, that managed to get by the censors in 1966. See more 09/18/2021 Great film. Does not have all the modern special effects etc, but the aerial combat scenes and the battle scenes are incredible. All the old planes are just breath taking. Makes you want to get in and fly one of the old biplanes. Loved it. See more 06/29/2021 I first saw The Blue Max as a young boy, and it was unforgettable. It has exciting, suspenseful aerial combat, with the many dogfights creatively choreographed and filmed, each featuring different tactics and outcomes. The airplanes are real, and are beautiful recreations or restorations, including Pfaltz, Albatros, and Fokker D-VII and Dr.1 triplanes. The story arc follows the career of a German soldier from mud-caked trench infantryman to national hero. Along the way, he goes from naive idealist to battle hardened killer as he encounters the world of Prussian soldier-aristocrats that dominate his squadron. George Peppard is quite good in the role, transforming from a wide-eyed rookie to a swaggering alpha-male. A German actor like Maximillian Schell would have been a more perfect choice for authenticity (Schell's brother Carl appears briefly as Baron Manfred von Richthofen), but perhaps it wouldn't have been quite as much fun. The romance that forms part of the story is integral to the non-Hollywood climax of the film. It's an adult, cynical "romance", with Ursula Andress at her sexiest. The soundtrack is thrilling and unforgettable too. I wish I could see The Blue Max for the first time all over again. I-MAX version please! NOTE: some reviewers have suggested that The Blue Max seems a bit long. Keep in mind that it was one of the many Hollywood EPIC films of the time that had intermissions, like Ben Hur, Cleopatra, and El Cid. It's pretty amazing that a story like The Blue Max was given such a big budget, considering that even the lead character is a bit of an anti-hero and the film as a whole goes against Hollywood stereotypes.
