College student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) returns home after his father has a stroke. When he discovers a severed ear in an abandoned field, Beaumont teams up with detective's daughter Sandy Williams (Laura Dern) to solve the mystery. They believe beautiful lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) may be connected with the case, and Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper).

At the risk of being called a sick son of a bitch, I believe it to be one of the most extraordinarily erotic and mesmerising experiences I have ever had in the cinema. Blue Velvet has the power to unsettle and disturb like nothing else.

Lynch doesn't seem to have read very much. He's only seen every movie ever made and in Blue Velvet goes far to elevate the art, if those are the words for it, to a level of purely sensual, personal obsession. It's a movie-lover's movie, but not much more.

One of my favorite David Lynch films. I was so lovely to watch this on the big screen. I hope our little Regency theater brings more Lynch films for throwback nights. The movie is a great dreamy noir with a fun soundtrack and gorgeous cinematography. Plenty of "ear"-iness. Disturbing and unsettling at times. All in the right ways.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Blue Velvet" (1986) is a striking movie that works as a mystery film, kind of coming of age story as well detective thriller, all wrapped with symbolism that only director David Lynch could have made. I still prefer some of his films more than "Blue Velvet" but this is a good film that I found myself involved in from the get go. Performances were very good by everyone involved and it is easy to see why the late Dennis Hopper become an actor to-go when looking for a good villain in a films from that point - it is a chilling performance. The young and future Oscar winner Laura Dern is also good here as well the entire cast. Music was haunting but it is the director who made his mark with this film. This could have easily been a mystery film that is quickly forgotten but not "Blue Velvet". Overall, "Blue Velvet" is a really good film that I found a bit to slow in some parts, but ultimately a rewarding movie watching experience.
