Alec B @AlecMichaelB 6h Diabolically outrageous, offensive, and undeniably hilarious. Borat remains a groundbreaking mockumentary that Sacha Baron Cohen somehow pulled off through real, unscripted interactions with unsuspecting members of the public. Rewatching it after visiting Kazakhstan gave me a very different perspective. The film's depiction of the country is, of course, entirely fictional and wildly unfair to the real Kazakhstan, which is modern, welcoming, and far more beautiful than the movie intentionally suggests. That said, Cohen's fearless commitment to Borat and his ability to expose prejudice and absurdity through improv are still astonishing. Equal parts satire and social experiment, Borat is as shocking today as it was in 2006.
