Critics Consensus

Crude and offensive, but with ample cultural insights and gut-busting laughs, Bruno is another outlandish and entertaining mockumentary from Sacha Baron Cohen.

Well, when it's funny, it is funny, but it is only intermittently funny... What I'm saying, I think, is that the joke has worn thin. Go to Full Review

Baron Cohen is, without doubt, the ballsiest comic of his generation-and one of the brightest. But it's hard to imagine him taking the guerrilla shock tactics of Borat and Brüno any further. Go to Full Review

Funny how Brüno, the latest cinematic incarnation inspired by a character from Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show, proves to be daring, topical, and so revealing about American society, while also being so crude, outrageous, and shocking. Go to Full Review

Blake- N @PBSAniDom 1d Brüno is a decent mockumentary that fully commits to its outrageous style of comedy. It follows the titular Austrian fashion reporter as he travels around pushing boundaries, and the film leans heavily into shock humor and cringe-driven satire. While not every joke lands, and some segments feel intentionally uncomfortable for the sake of it, there’s no denying the commitment to the character and the improvised chaos that drives the film. What works best is the way it satirizes celebrity culture and media obsession, often putting real reactions at the center of absurd situations. However, the humor can be very hit-or-miss depending on your tolerance for provocative and over-the-top setups. Overall, Brüno is uneven but still entertaining in parts, especially if you’re a fan of mockumentary-style comedy that pushes boundaries. Not for everyone, but it has enough moments to earn a 6/10. I like his other movies, this one was just a waste of time👎 See more Steven F. @SteveGotScored Feb 19 Honestly one of the best and crudest comedies ever! See more Shaun R @Shaun666 Jun 11 One of the funniest films ever made. I love how it offends and disgusts in equal measure. Puts the typical Hollywood comedy to shame. See more Kevin P @RT55971421 01/25/2025 A really funny and creatively raunchy spiritual successor to Borat that pushes the envelope at satirizing American materialism and homophobia while exposing some legitimately horrific and ridiculous sentiments said by the unknowing participants. It’s a hilarious mockumentary that was legendary during my middle school days and I’m so glad that I finally got to watch it.
