See more Marco L @decatur555 6d Children of Men is a magnificent dystopian thriller set in a terrifyingly believable future Britain where no child has been born for years. Alfonso Cuarón builds the world through streets, propaganda, cages and frightened people rather than endless explanations, making the collapse of society feel immediate and real. Clive Owen is excellent as a tired, disillusioned man who gradually finds a reason to care again, while Clare-Hope Ashitey gives humanity and personality to a character who could easily have become only a symbol. The long action sequences are astonishing, especially the car attack and the final journey through a devastated city, but the technique always serves the story. Brutal, tense, beautifully made and still disturbingly relevant. The world is harsh, believable, and frightening precisely because it never feels exaggerated. At first I thought the central premise made no sense: if humanity can't have children anymore, why on earth would any country reject immigrants? They should be begging people to come. Then I remembered I live in a country where deaths vastly outnumber births, yet immigration is still treated as a threat instead of a necessity. That's when the movie landed its hardest punch. Director Alfonso Cuarón’s dystopian sci-fi action thriller Children of Men (2006) is utterly insane. Cuarón’s direction is the stuff of madness with every single scene being a giant long take each. It must have taken forever. The constant explosions, surprises, gunfire, and blasts are startling. Children of Men is an amazing picture with real ambition, gritty style, heartfelt emotions, thoughtful commentary, and heinous violence. It is dark, depressing, yet poignant because of Cuarón’s realism. Clive Owen is gripping and quietly moving as Thelonius Faron, who is grieving his dead son, a dead world, a dead relationship, and his dead courage. Julianne Moore is amazing as the freedom fighter Fishes leader Julian Taylor. She is so focused and compelling with an endearing quality.
