Unlike standard issue noir, though, in which the character becomes embroiled in crime of the civilian (if sometimes organized) variety, Chile ’76 involves political crime and the always present threat of domestic political violence.

Kept my attention mainly because of the lead actress. I don't have much knowledge about Chile's history, but this was a good slow burn thriller for spy fans.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The 1976 settings were presented effectively. And the plot kept me involved throughout the film, in a Hitchcockian sort of way. Aline Kppenheim was great in the role of Carmen. If you don't know about the difficult times during the Pinochet military dictatorship during this time, this film will leave you wanting to know more about it.

This is an example of why you can't trust the reviews. This movie is highly over rated. And it isn't because I'm personally against foreign films. As a comparison, the foreign film "The Lives of Others" is a genuine 5-star movie. It has an interesting story, good acting and the suspense keeps you on edge to the very end. In contrast, Chile '76 was painfully slow and not particularly interesting despite an interesting premise, and there's no payoff from slogging through this slow, dull movie. You'll find yourself waiting for a climax that really never happens. When it's over, you'll be thinking "is that it?" So disappointing.

For me, this film never gets inside the characters, it feels as if we are looking at them from a distance. We are left to guess what the main character might be thinking, without any indication that she is a person with any strong character or personality, which leaves us with the impression that she is just a naive shallow woman out of her depth, which ultimately means that one does not feel involvement or care to any great extent what happens to her or the story
