Michael D @MichaelX Jul 27 I’d seen this Brazilian masterpiece many years ago, perhaps at the Clay, the Fillmore, or the Lumiere, one of those beloved San Francisco art houses whose names have blurred together with time. However, the hubby hadn’t ever seen it, and revisiting it two-plus decades later, the impact wasn’t diminished at all. Fernando Meirelles’ visceral portrait of two boys growing up in Rio’s Cidade de Deus favela, their lives diverging into radically different fates, remains one of cinema’s great gut-punches. The constant rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire, the sun-scorched grime, the extraordinary performances from a cast of mostly non-professional actors, it all drops you squarely into a world most of us will never know and probably not fully recover from seeing. That it still shocks and dismays while leaving a sliver of hope is the mark of genuinely great filmmaking. If you haven’t seen it, stop what you’re doing and add this to your queue. It is terrifying how true it rings, presenting a cycle of systemic violence and lost innocence that feels less like a scripted drama and more like a visceral, lived-in reality.
