Two years after a momentous cattle drive under the guidance of cowboy Curly (Jack Palance) in the first City Slickers, Curly has passed away, and Mitch (Billy Crystal) discovers the dead man's treasure map, which shows the location of a hidden cave containing the stash. With his brother Glen (Jon Lovitz) and best friend Phil (Daniel Stern), Mitch sets out to find Curly's gold. On the trail, the trio once again battle danger, this time with the help of Curly's twin brother, Duke (Palance).

Critics Consensus

Lacking any of the charm of its predecessor, City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold meanders around the map without ever finding comedy gold.

Crystal and director Paul Weiland shoot themselves in the foot by borrowing shamelessly from almost every other western ever conceived -- including the first "Slickers."

I kept wondering how the filmmakers mustered up the energy to go to work every morning.

Everything about the movie feels secondhand, including the wheezy plot about a treasure map and buried gold.

Fans of the original may enjoy a return to the ranch and the buddy movie antics that follow, but this sequel never quite harnesses the charm of the first film.

Tries too hard to replicate the "City Slickers" experience without fully appreciating what made the original film so special.

Here, the motivation isn't excitement or bolstering self-esteem as much as it is just greed and dwelling on regrets.

Number one was good enough as a family film but this was rubbish, especially now that there's two idiots (Daniel Stern & Jon Lovitz) instead of just the one. I really wish Bruno Kirby had returned for this movie because his character helped balance out Daniel's dumb guy character. I'm glad they kept Norman though, seeing the character return was cute.

Jon Lovitz comes in here and saves this movie. The Curly has a twin idea was stupid. It would be more believable if Curly simply wasn't dead

The sequel nobody asked for. It's pointless, lacks the charm or laughs of the first and features some real groanworthy coincidences. I used to love this as a kid, but it hasn't aged well at all. Still, there's some nostalgia here, if you had warm memories of this.
