Marco L @decatur555 1 day ago A darker return to the franchise works better than I expected. Fiona Dourif gives Nica a strong sense of vulnerability without turning her into a passive victim, and the isolated-house setting, stormy atmosphere and slower build help Chucky feel sinister again. I still prefer the character when he mixes horror with more black humor, but there are enough nasty little jokes here to keep the film from becoming too solemn. Don Mancini also reconnects the story with earlier mythology instead of treating this as a clean reboot, which adds interest for longtime viewers. The main weakness is pacing: the film spends a long time hiding what the audience already knows, and some supporting characters are much less compelling than Nica. The continuity also requires a few contrivances. Even so, the atmosphere works, the kills are imaginative and the darker approach is far more effective than I feared. This one is better for returning the horror and losing the over the top camp/weirdness, but has its own issues. Wants to get back to the first one, but seems to struggle to shrug the legacy of the series. Ends up not committing one way or the other and the result is muddled. Should have just been a hard reboot and Chucky looks so much worse. Other than a few nit picks with the overall look of chucky, I think this film was dam near perfect. See more Read all reviews
