DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD Feb 16, 2023 Death Kappa is essentially what Notzilla wanted to be, a loving throwback to the Kaiju films of the Shōwa era. The problem is that Death Kappa's influences are more aligned with some of the worst Kaiju films of that era, with very little actual plot, ugly main monster design and an unmemorable main cast of characters. The effects sequences themselves are decent, essentially combining the styles of Shinji Higuchi and Ishrio Honda with a distinct air of cheapness. While the dull human plotline is much more akin to the works of Jun Fukuda, although credit where credit is due, the guest cast is by far and away the best part of this film; Mika Kimura and Hideaki Anno stealing the film even with their very limited roles. Jan 31, 2013 A giant reptilian monster threatens Japan after group of crazed scientists unleash nuclear devastation over the land, and it is up to the kappa of ancient legend to save the world in DEATH KAPPA! Rather than paying homage to the classic Kaiju era in a reverent satire, DEATH KAPPA reduces itself to an idiotic spoof that is continually brought down by its sophomoric screenplay and dulled sense of humor. Director Tomo'o Haraguchi intentionally reveals the wires carrying the model planes, the false backdrops, and the cheapness of his scale miniatures for laughs, but each weakened attempt to poke fun at the genre falls flat due to the poor production quality and complete lack of wit. The horrendous costume designs for the two leading monsters do nothing to help, either. What we are left with is a muddled, disjointed mess of a film that is an embarrassment to Kaiju fans everywhere. See more

Aug 15, 2012 A unsuccessful parody of the Daikaiju genre, there's more to shake one's head at than to laugh at. The monster suits are fine, the basic plot is decent but the messy subplots and constant style changes really affect it. The final monster battle is fun, abet silly, but it's not enough to justify any of the things that came before it. See more

May 15, 2012 It is really disappointing movie. See more

May 5, 2011 The big problem here is that this flick tries to pay homage to so many different types of Japanese sci-fi and fantasy movies that it bites off more then it can chew and just becomes a silly and practically incoherent blend of goofball nonsense. At the very least the film could have been a nostalgic tribute to Japanese genre flicks had it, like the films it tries to honor, taken itself seriously and let the campy charm flow naturally. But the makers treat it all with goofy humor as if they are trying to pay homage and yet mock their subject matter at the same time. All that results is a dull and noisy mess that only serves to insult the films it set out to pay homage to. See more
