Five strangers' day begins with an elevator ride in a Philadelphia office tower. But, what happens next is anything but ordinary. The elevator gets stuck, and the trapped passengers, who expected to be together just a few minutes, now face the revelation of their secrets and transgressions. Frightening events turn annoyance into terror, as they begin to realize that one of their number is Lucifer himself.

Critics Consensus

It's better than many of the other films M. Night Shyamalan has been associated with, but Devil never gets more than a few low-budget thrills out of its fiendishly promising premise.

Devil isn't really scary, the acting stinks, and it's not that clever, but you can rest knowing that the culprit isn't a hand puppet.

Circling wildly within the film's main set -- a stalled elevator car -- or hurtling up and down an empty shaft, Mr. Fujimoto's camera is as giddy as a tween at a Justin Bieber concert.

…if most of Shyamalan’s films take a long time to get to laughable punchlines, Devil is quite the opposite, rushing headlong through all manner of crazy plot-points and red-herring characters...an ideal streaming time-passer, short and packed with twists

Unlike something such as The Exorcist, which will scare the bejesus out of you no matter what you believe, this PG-13 horror film doesn’t give its audience or its characters enough cause to buy its central gimmick.

"Devil" is a truly strange horror/thriller movie. In a lot of ways, the premise is actually kind of interesting, but in a lot of other ways, the movie is also a bit too silly. I can see how M. Night was the mind behind the story here, but I don't find the big reveal at the end all that satisfying. I do think it often feels claustrophobic and tense, but it falls into the trap of cutting to black every time something scary happens, which gets a bit old. Overall, it is certainly a movie that feels like it's from the early 2010s, so it can be nostalgic, but it is ultimately not one where the experience of watching it really stands out for me.

Strange and only moderately effective captivity thriller and supernatural - morality tale from the M Night Shyamalan studio has the Devil sequestering several captive prisoners in an elevator, asking for blood from one of them: in repentance for a crime they committed. Shyamalan did better with this sort of thing in Split. It's obvious and predictable; but there are some effective moments; The Facts of Life's Jenny O'Hara plays an effective villain; and most of the acting is good. A mixed bag overall...

In a world where scary films rely on jump scares to keep you at the edge of your seat, Devil isn't that kind of movie, but don't doubt it for a second, it still delivers a good scary story that will keep you thinking about it for a while. If you are old as a dinosaur and think movies like the exorcist are still scary, this movie isn't for you.
