What to Know

Critics Consensus

A stylized satire whose audacious design proves too mannered for some of the laughs to smoothly land, Digger is a bold swing of the shovel by Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu that misses as often as it strikes gold.

Audience Says

As meta as Tom Cruise is magnetic, Digger ambitiously digs into satire with mixed returns -- a vibrant masterpiece for some and turning up coal for others.

Feels distant and rarely compelling. Easy to revere the theme. Easier to dislike the rest. Go to Full Review

Iñárritu takes big swings, and here he dares to evoke iconic works such as Citizen Kane and Dr. Strangelove. But Digger, bedazzled with the production design and theatrical effects a big budget can buy, can’t match those films’ originality or bite. Go to Full Review

The decrepit, emaciated feline holding on for dear life emerges as the most sympathetic, memorable character in a film full of cartoon villains and one-dimensional caricatures. Go to Full Review

There’s nothing new to Iñárritu’s misgivings about satire but it is odd that the always efficacious Cruise has made a film that distrusts art and doesn’t believe in action. Go to Full Review

In the end, Digger might provoke and start conversations, as it certainly excels in its auteur footprint, yet it still leaves a bitter aftertaste and remains a bit lost in its own high-mindedness. Go to Full Review

Kyeong 19 hrs ago great story and performance! See more Dannyboy 1 day ago Beautiful and unique, well acted. However the writers/directors personal issues with TRUMP undermine the more profound points and timeless themes made about our society. The movie has a point of view, agreeing isn’t required to appreciate its artistry. Still a good film overall but could have been more impactful without many of the divisive cheap shots. See it anyway though because it’s pretty great regardless!! See more Anthony 1 day ago This has to be one of the most consequential films ever made. It speaks to deep truths that are often hard to hear, which is the only way I can understand why this movie was not a critical success. Meaning, people hate feeling bad about themselves even if its precisely this that would begin to allow us to plot a path out of what we have created. The film points a legitimate finger at our lifestyle choices, annd that we largely ignore the cost of our decisions directly, preferring to point our finger elsewhere so that we plan play victim. Tom Cruise gives one of the most astonishing performances of his storied career. And the film does all of this with a great humor at the same time as tackling one of the most profound poly-crises in human history - one we ourselves created. Haunting. See more Skippy 1 day ago Oh I’m digging it so much rn See more Mark W Gray 1 day ago It was awesome. Tom Cruise WILL win an Oscar for this See more pauliina g 2 days ago Outstanding!
