Critics Consensus

With an adherence to YA formula that undercuts its individualistic message, Divergent opens its planned trilogy in disappointingly predictable fashion.

The film is more interesting than the average bad movie precisely because it so gratuitously, and even thematically, fails to fit together. Go to Full Review

This is a rite-of-passage film, with action, romance and self-realization woven in. But unlike some others of this genre, Divergent is thought-provoking teen sci-fi. Go to Full Review

A J @RT30824839 2h Enjoyed this film …even the annoying characters were well performed by convincing actors and recently bought the trilogy via Apple TV platform Interesting storyline that kept me intrigued See more Alexander F @MissaLyssa Mar 14 Ive always enjoyed it, but its held back by its source material not being that great to begin with. See more Leaburn O @RT35452347 Jan 10 This has come out of left field but is this not the best teen dystopic film out there? It has a good plot, it’s well acted, the leads gave good chemistry. It is well designed, not over the top. I genuinely thought this was really impressive and enjoyable. Watched on DVD. The cast is great, but doesn't match the book. I really just went off the book when watching this. it's 2 hours and barely fit what the book had. I am in the fandom so I like how it gave me visualization to the book and such, but I DEFINITELY think you should read the book, then watch the movie.
