Disillusioned knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) befriends Draco (Sean Connery), the last of the dragons, and the two begin scamming village folk as Bowen repeatedly "kills" Draco for money. Bowen soon learns that Draco is the same dragon who once saved his former student, now King Einon (David Thewlis), from death by giving him a piece of his heart. Einon is now a merciless tyrant, and Bowen is compelled to stop him -- but the bond between king and dragon means if one dies, the other does as well.

Critics Consensus

Dragonheart gives us medieval action, a splendidly mulleted Dennis Quaid, and Sean Connery as a talking dragon -- and, unfortunately, a story that largely fails to engage.

Rob Cohen's Dragonheart is one of the most sublimely silly movies I have ever seen. Since it combines its silliness with special effects that are, quite simply, sublime, I must resist the urge to take easy shots at it.

This mildly engaging castle-storming adventure is best pegged as a family comedy.

A film more concerned with budgetary management than narrative brio, of high frills and low thrills — essentially proof of concept for bigger, better movies that were in the pipeline.

Before dragons became cool with How To Train Your Dragon and Game of Thrones, there was this 1996 fantasy film about a dragon hunter and a dragon forming an unlikely bond to dethrone a tyrannical king. Its cheesy, leaning a lot into comedy elements, but between a sense of nostalgia and a reminder of what large scale CGI was like in the mid 90s, matched by great voice work from Sean Connery, there is a simple good time to be had with this.

Great fantasy movie when it came out in the 90’s. Obviously it’s a bit dated compared to better cgi nowadays… but the fact it still gets by today as decent, shows you what it was upon its release!!! Always a fun watch and uplifting story!

Dragonheart (1996) is a decent fantasy adventure with a lot of heart, though it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the best in the genre. The visuals, especially the dragon animation, were impressive for the time, and the story has its moments of charm and humor. Dennis Quaid and the dragon’s voice performance add some warmth, but the plot can feel a bit predictable, and some characters are underdeveloped. It’s enjoyable and entertaining enough to watch, but not truly memorable. Overall, a solid 6/10.

Underrated medieval fantasy classic. The action is fun, it has an important message about power, a CGI dragon that still looks pretty good today, lighthearted humor with serious moments, and a score by Randy Edelmen that absolutely SOARS and may make you cry. For me, it did. Definitely one of Sean Connery's most underrated roles.
