Critics Consensus

Riley Keough and Alicia Vikander give it their all, but Earthquake Bird suffers from a frustrating inability to bring its literary source material consistently to life.

A mousy Alicia Vikander casts a convincing spell...and Westmoreland finds plenty of additional intrigue in this late 1980s Japanese setting... Go to Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Nov 25, 2019
Earthquake Bird is somewhat laborious in making its points, but it's a film whose unsettling qualities will grow on you with time. Go to Full Review Karen Han Polygon Nov 18, 2019
The number of themes present in the film might work in literary form, but as a film, Earthquake Bird feels rushed and incomplete. Go to Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Dec 1, 2021

Earthquake Bird is definitely a cut above Netflix's usual fare. On a surface level the film doesn't have that weird plastic sheen Netflix releases always seem to be cheapened by. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Chris P @cparm54 Jan 19, 2025 An odd watch. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The credits rolled and I said to myself aloud, "Well what was the point of that?" Never a good sign when rating a movie. Too many questions and WAY too few answers. See more Helen S @RT13278183 May 14, 2024 What’s not to love about this movie. Alicia and Riley give stunning performances and the backdrop of Tokyo makes this film visually beautiful whilst the story captivates and draws you in. See more ty r @TyroneRugen Jan 21, 2023 Felt new and different. Definity worth a watch. Just fell a little short of great. Needed a little more development. See more steve d @RT35616104 Dec 7, 2022 The story is kind of all over the place, but the acting is really strong. See more Jerod S @jeroduptown Aug 2, 2022 Vikander has been running from death...and now in Japan, she's caught between bad fortune and the fate of a new lover she can't seem to shake. Interesting elements blended well by Scott. See more Read all reviews
