Appreciation of Japanese sushi art and culture from the lenses of a Mexican - plus a story that does not superficially celebrate instant success but a journey of hardwork and perseverance. Also, the focus on mentorship and friendship without romance is a good plot as well. The ending was surprisingly very good! Unfortunately, this movie probably did not have same budget or major company backing it so never got the recognition it truly deserves. It's a really beautiful movie with a very moving performance by main actress. I honestly always wonder why I never saw a female sushi chef myself. My greatest concern of the movie is that I don't know whether it promotes woman's right and racial integration, or it insults the Japanese culture. While it usually takes years of training for one to become a sushi chef, this talented young girl from a totally different cultural background did it in matters of months. It discounts the professionalism of the sushi chefs, as well as the influence of cultural background to a cuisine. See more Read all reviews
