The price of fame and the cost of fandom come crashing together in some amusingly suspenseful ways in Elle l'adore, the debut feature from French actress-turned-director Jeanne Herry.

This drily comic French thriller marks the feature debut of writer-director Jeanne Herry, whose deceptively calm surfaces and psychologically nuanced characterizations prove her a worthy student of Claude Chabrol.

Despite the promising yet contrived scenario, Elle L'Adore has too many component parts. It's a shaggy dog story which doesn't add up to a lot.

So if the Frenchies invented the dénouement - how come they never bloody use it???!! No, this is actually one of the very reasons I love French cinema even if every ending leaves you more or less frustrated. Was prepared for a light-hearted comedy, perhaps from what I'd read in the Ciné Lumière's programme. Was not prepared for this tense, dark detective drama with interestingly irrational, unreliable characters, a number of unpredictable plot twists and a twinpeaksy overnight change of hair colour to boot! The disturbing opening scene evokes the real-life incident/accident involving Cantat-Trintignant in 2003.

OK; but the story is indeed rather unconvincing.
